Annotation : Line Drawings is a set of four pieces inspired by the American painter Philip Guston. Each movement serves as a musical depiction of the purpose of the art as described by the artist. The work’s first movement is perhaps the most challenging with frequent metric shifts, but overall the work is approachable. The second movement challenges the players through hocketing and frequent and sudden dynamic shifts. Movement three opens with a solo passage in the first clarinet and movement four employs short staccato articulations and sudden dynamic shifts to create excitement.
