Annotation : Composed in four movements, this relatively unknown quartet by Walter Hartley is approachable by most young ensembles. The range of the work rarely enters the altissimo register, and when it does, it happens primarily in the first clarinet part. The work does not use key signatures, so all accidentals are written in. The tempo markings for the work are unclear. The first movement for example is in six-eight and nine-eight time, but the tempo marking indicates the tempo should be quarter note equals 160. It is unclear if this is what the composer intended or if it is an editor error.
